BERKELEY - California faces Stanford for the second time this season in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament Thursday at noon from McAllister Field on the USC campus. This is the first time the Golden Bears will play in the conference tournament since 2013, and the first time in the
Brooke Eubanks' era.
Prior to an 18-6 loss to Colorado in the regular-season finale, Cal clinched a berth in the tournament with a 16-14 win at Fresno State.
Jena Fritts led the way for the Bears with seven points, tying a personal best, on five goals and two assists.
Susie Ropp also collected five points (four goals, one assist).
Cal will try to snap a 14-game losing streak against Stanford. The last time the Bears beat Stanford was in 2008. Cal defeated Stanford in the 2004 MPSF Tournament final, the one time the Bears have won the conference tournament.
Cal boasts an all-time record of 8-12 in the MPSF Tournament, and the Bears have advanced to the championship game three times (2004, 2005, 2009).
Jena Fritts is Cal's leading scorer with 60 points on 44 goals and 16 assists. Fritts, who paced the Bears in points and assists a year ago, has scored a career-best six goals on two separate occasions, and that total is tied for second best in school single-game history. She's also set her personal best with seven points twice this season.
Cal's defensive leader this season,
Meredith Haggerty often finds herself marked up with the opposing team's top attacker, along with
Sara Nolte. She leads the team in draws with 39 and caused turnovers with 20. Haggerty is also a valuable contributor on offense, as well.
True freshman
Susie Ropp has started every game this season. She is second on the team in points (40) and assists (13). She scored six points twice this year before collecting five at Fresno State last Friday, which earned her MPSF Rookie of the Week honors.
