SEATTLE, Wash. – A strong first half by No. 6 Washington put the Huskies in front early and the Cal football team couldn't come up with the answers it needed to stage a comeback as the Bears fell 38-7 at Husky Stadium.
Washington (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) hit the scoreboard first Saturday as an 11-yard touchdown from Jake Browning to Hunter Bryant put the Huskies in front. Cal (3-3, 0-3) looked to counter, but the Bears couldn't string together a sustained drive and Washington took a 7-0 lead after a quarter.
The Huskies added to their advantage in the second, with a field goal by Van Soderberg, a 21-yard touchdown run by Browning and an 8-yard touchdown run by Myles Gaskin pushing the score to 24-0. Cal showed flashes of breaking through at various points but still couldn't translate that to a series of first downs as the Bears went to the locker room with a 221-46 deficit in total offense.
Cal's biggest play of the night came courtesy of its defense in the third quarter. A completion from Browning to Dante Pettis ended up on the ground after
James Looney punched the ball out for a fumble.
Darius Allensworth raced to make the recovery and, after grabbing it in stride, never stopped running as he shed would-be Husky tacklers en route to a 37-yard return for a touchdown.
Washington added two touchdowns after halftime, scoring on a 2-yard pass from Browning to Jusstis Warren and a 7-yard run by Gaskin.
Action returns to California Memorial Stadium on Friday night as the Bears host Washington State at 7:30. pm PT. Cal remains at home the following week as Arizona pays a visit on Oct. 21. Kickoff time for that game has not yet been announced.
