Webb's Five TDs Not Enough In Loss To ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State scored late touchdowns on an interception return and an onside kick return to beat Cal 51-41 in the Pac-12 opener for both teams on Saturday night.

The Sun Devils' Laiu Moekiola returned an interception by Cal's Davis Webbl 28 yards for a touchdown to put the Sun Devils (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) ahead 44-34 with 2:52 remaining.

Webb's fifth touchdown pass of the night, 26 yards to Demetris Robertson, cut the lead to 44-41 with 54 seconds to play. But D.J. Calhoun grabbed the onside kick try and ran untouched to the end zone.

ASU's Zane Gonzalez nailed three field goals, the last of which was a 23-yarder that careened off the right upright to put the Sun Devils ahead for good 37-34 with 2:55 remaining.

Webb completed 31 of 55 for 478 yards for Cal (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12).

The Bears (2-2, 0-1) led 24-10 at the half but Arizona State to score 34 second-half points, 24 in the fourth quarter

After neither team managed a first down on their first possessions, Cal proceeded to march nearly the length of the field to put the first points on the board. Backed up to their 2-yard line following an ASU punt, the Bears covered 98 yards in nine plays. What got Cal started was a 23-yard pass on third-and-9 from the 3 from Webb to Chad Hansen, who got one toe down on the far sideline. A short while later, Webb hit Robertson in the corner of the end zone on a 19-yard pass.

On ASU's next possession, Darius Allensworth jumped a Sun Devil receiver and came up with his first interception of the year. The Bears couldn't punch it in and Matt Anderson's 42-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, breaking his string of 17 made field goals in a row.

ASU closed to within 7-3 on a 35-yard field goal by Gonzalez with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Bears responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that included a fourth-down conversion from the Sun Devil 30 and concluded with a Webb-to-Hansen connection from 20 yards out. Hansen had five catches on the drive for 42 yards, including his sixth TD of the year. Just before the half, Cal kicker Matt Anderson knocked through a 20-yard field goal to lift Cal to a 17-3 lead.

ASU then came right back down the field with quarterback Manny Wilkins running the ball in from eight yards out with just 1:24 left in the half to make it 17-10.

But that was more than enough time for Webb and the Bears, who needed just 1:02 to complete an 82-yard drive. Webb's 23-yard pass to Brandon Singleton gave Cal a 24-10 advantage at the break.

ASU began the second half and proceeded to close the gap to 24-17 on a 1-yard rush up the middle by Wilkins. Cal and Anderson responded with a 47-yard field goal to push the Bears' edge back to 10 points. The back-and-forth continued with another field goal from ASU's Gonzalez, this time from 44 yards to make it 27-20 Cal with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter.
