No. 19 Cal Beats No. 30 UW After Rain Delay

BERKELEYAndre Goransson's singles win clinched No. 19 California's 4-0 victory over No. 30 Washington on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. After a brief rain delay, the 23rd-ranked Cal junior defeated Jake Douglas, 6-2, 6-2, at court-three singles to end the contest.

Cal improved its overall record to 12-5 and to 3-2 in the Pac-12 after the Conference match. Washington now has a 16-6 (3-2 in the Pac-12) record.

With rain in the forecast, the teams played singles instead of doubles first to attempt to complete an official match. Since Cal clinched at 4-0, the teams did not play doubles.

“Starting with singles first today definitely made our guys narrow their focus, and we really played well today,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Washington is a tough, well-coached team, and it was so encouraging for us to get a lead and control the match the way we did.

“I think we had some pent up energy after our poor showing last weekend in L.A. We played like we had something to prove today, and our goal is to continue to bring that focus and toughness to every match we play the rest of the season.”

After Cal won all six first sets and each match moved into its second set, light rain hit Hellman. After a short suspension of play, action resumed, and soon 30th-ranked junior Florian Lakat put the Bears on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 78 Mitch Stewart on court one.

Ranked 76th, senior Oskar Wikberg quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sebastian Hawken on court five to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Filip Bergevi, another junior, defeated Gal Hakak, 6-2, 6-4, on court four to make the score 3-0, and then Goransson ended play for good with his court-three win.

Cal returns to Hellman on Saturday for a 1 p.m. Conference match against No. 36 Oregon.
