LA JOLLA, Calif. — In a tight affair, the No. 18 Golden Bears' Tyler Browne and JT Nishimura defeated fellow California teammates Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat in the quarterfinals of the 127th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Saturday afternoon.

The seventh-seeded duo of sophomore, Nishimura, and Bears' associate head coach, Browne, defeated their teammates 6-4; 6-7(6);7-6; 7-6(7). It took a thriller third set tiebreaker over the sixth-seeded Bergevi and Lakat for Nishimura and Browne to advance to the semi-finals, which will be held Sunday morning.

“We played quite well today under the sunny sky in La Jolla,” said Cal head men's tennis coach Peter Wright. “We had three teams in the round of 16 and two in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, our two quarter-final teams had to play each other.”

Prior to beating Bergevi and Lakat Saturday afternoon, Nishimura and Browne had to beat the fourth-seeded Peter Smith of USC and Kaes Van't Hof who is a graduate of USC in the morning. Nishimura and Browne defeated the Trojans' coach and former player 6-2; 2-6; 6-2 in the round of 16.

Nishimura and Browne will face the top-seeded No. 15 Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe of No. 5 Oklahoma State in the semi-finals. The Bears' Bergevi and Lakat just played a doubles match against Cash and Kadhe on Thursday. The Cowboys defeated Cal in that doubles matchup 6-3.

Also competing Saturday was the Bears' 14-seeded Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith. The duo lost their round of 16 match to seventh-seeded Max Cressy and Martin Redlicki of UCLA 7-5; 6-2. Cressy and Redlicki proceeded to lose later in the day to Cash and Kadhe by the score of 7-6(5); 4-6; 7-5.
