BURLINGAME, Calif. – Fourteenth-ranked California avoided the rain in the San Francisco Bay Area and defeated No. 45 Purdue, 6-1, on Sunday indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center. After capturing the doubles point, the 7-2 Golden Bears clinched the match when senior Oskar Wikberg beat the Boilermakers' Mateus Silva, 6-2, 6-3, in singles.

The match was originally scheduled to take place at the Hellman Tennis Complex outdoors in Berkeley. But with inclement weather forecast for Sunday, the teams decided last week to play the nonconference match at the indoor facility across the Bay.

Wikberg also combined with sophomore J.T. Nishimura to secure the doubles point, as the Cal duo beat Silva and Renan Hanayama, 6-3, on court three. Cal juniors Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat won the first doubles match, 6-2, over Benjamin Ugarte and Gergely Madarasz, 6-2, on court one.

In singles, Nishimura again bested Hanayama, 6-1, 6-1, on court six to give Cal a 2-0 lead on the Boilermakers. Bergevi followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dominik Sochurek on court four to make the score 3-0, and then the 52nd-ranked Wikberg clinched the match one court over. The Bears won two out of the last three matches to make the score 6-1.

Cal returns to action in the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge presented by Oracle, with the Golden Bears taking on the No. 18 Baylor Bears on March 19 and facing the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners on March 20 in Indian Wells, California.
