AUSTIN - The fourth time was the charm for No. 24 California in the Golden Bears' latest clash with Texas. Cal routed No. 26 Texas, 4-0, on Saturday in a nonconference clash in the Weller Indoor Tennis Center. Sophomore Billy Griffith clinched the victory with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 win over Adrian Ortiz at court-four singles.
Cal improved its record to 3-1, while Texas fell to 4-5.
The Longhorns ended Cal's season in each of the past two years, knocking off the Bears in the NCAA team tournament, and defeated Cal in the 2014 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship.
But Cal ended the recent losing streak in resounding fashion.
The teams split the first two doubles matches, with first Cal and then Texas winning a match. Court two decided matters, with senior Oskar Wikberg and junior Andre Goransson prevailing over the Longhorns' George Goldhoff and Julian Zlobinsky, 6-4, to give Cal a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Junior Filip Bergevi, ranked 86th, doubled Cal's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rodrigo Banzer on court three. Goransson, ranked third in singles, followed with a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-0 win on court two, before Griffith ended the match with his win.
“We played better in doubles today, and we came out with purpose in the singles,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “With five of the singles matches going into the third set, we had quite a battle on our hands. Texas is a perennial top team in the country, and today we finished up with high-quality play late in the third sets to clinch the victory.”
The Bears remain in Austin to take on No. 2 TCU (3-0) on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT. On Saturday in Austin, the Horned Frogs defeated No. 18 Stanford, 4-2.
