No. 12 Cal Blasts Pepperdine, 4-0

BERKELEY – Twelfth-ranked California made quick work of Pepperdine on Saturday, defeating the Waves, 4-0, in two hours at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Golden Bear junior Filip Bergevi clinched the match with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Stefan Menichella.

Cal improved its record to 6-1 with the nonconference victory, while Pepperdine fell to 3-5.

Bergevi also won in doubles, as he and junior Florian Lakat knocked off Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine, 6-1, on court one. Senior Mads Engsted and sophomore J.T. Nishimura secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Menichella and Tom Hill on court three.

Cal was likewise dominant in singles, winning five of six first sets. Sophomore Billy Griffith doubled Cal's lead to 2-0 when he beat Iamachkine on court four, 6-1, 6-1, and Nishimura soon followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hill on court six that gave Cal a 3-0 lead. Bergevi wrapped up the match on court three, and the remaining singles matches were abandoned.

“You can always play a little better, but there was good focus today from our guys,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We managed our energy well. We came out with positive intentions and position motivation after the doubles points, and I thought we really got on them early in the singles and just really carried that through.

“We got good performances up and down the courts. Florian got off to a really good start. In the middle of the lineup, Billy and Filip are playing wonderful tennis, and J.T. coming back from being a little sick played a solid match at No. 6.”

“As a whole as a team it was good,” Lakat added. “We came out pretty strong in doubles. We won doubles and didn't have a sloppy beginning in singles, which can happen. Everyone came out strong, and I think it was crucial for the rest of the match.”

The Bears take on No. 9 Oklahoma State on Thursday in La Jolla, California, where the Bears will also compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships from Thursday through Sunday.
