BERKELEY ? Mads Engsted ? who won a pair of titles at last year's Aggie Invitational ? hopes to duplicate his success in this year's tournament that runs Friday through Sunday in Davis, California. Engsted, who won the top-flight singles crown and ? with
J.T. Nishimura ? the top-flight double title in 2014, is the top seed in flight A singles and with Nishimura the top seed in flight A doubles this year.
UC Davis is the host of the tournament, which will takes place at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
In the 2014 tournament, Cal won a total of four titles, including current senior Wyatt Houghton winning the flight B singles crown, and the duo of senior Jordan Smith and former Bear Nikhil Jayashankar wining the flight B doubles title.
This year's Cal contingent heading to Davis consists of Engsted, Nishimura, Smith and freshmen Gunther Matta and Ryan Shen.
Besides Cal and UC Davis, teams sending players to Davis include Stanford, Nevada, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, San Francisco and Pacific. The Aggie Invitational will include two singles flights and two doubles flights, with corresponding consolation brackets. Live scoring and live streams are not available. Bears Vie For Glory in Tiburon
Cal juniors Andre Goransson and Florian Lakat will compete on Thursday in main draw doubles at the $100,000 Wells Fargo Tiburon Challenger in Tiburon, California. The Bears were scheduled to play their opening round of 16 match against Dennis Kudla and Dustin Brown on Wednesday, but rain in the San Francisco Bay Area postponed the match.

In the singles main draw at the Tiburon Challenger, Goransson took on Henri Laaksonen in the opening round of 32 on Sept. 29. But the Swede fell to the Swiss pro player, 6-2, 6-4, at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.
Cal junior Filip Bergevi and alumnus Ben McLachlan took part in qualifying singles at the Tiburon Challenger over the weekend. But McLachlan fell to Dennis Nevolo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of 32 on Sept. 26. Bergevi won his round of 32 match, beating Maxime Tchoutakian, 7-6(5), 6-3, on Sept. 26, before losing to the seventh-seeded Marcos Giron,7-6(3), 6-1, in the round of 16 on Sept. 27.
Billy Griffith Wins Singles at Napa Valley Classic
Cal's Billy Griffith won the biggest title of his young college career on Sept. 27 when the Golden Bear sophomore defeated teammate Florian Lakat, 10-6, in the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic singles final at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
Griffith's morning began with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Stanford's David Wilczynski to take group four with a 3-0 record. Lakat, ranked 36th in the ITA preseason poll, beat George Goldhoff of Texas, 7-6(5), 6-2, to win group one with a 3-0 record.
A third Bear, Mads Engsted, also reached the singles playoff, dubbed the Solinco Wild-Card Shootout. The senior lost his group seven match to USTA junior William Howells, 6-4, 6-0, and tied Stanford's Michael Genender with 2-1 group records. But Engsted had the tiebreaker, having beaten Genender, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), earlier in the tournament.
In the shootout ? featuring the eight group winners ? Engsted lost in his first match, 10-3, to the Longhorns' Liam Caruana. Griffith defeated Baylor's Will Little, 10-7, in the quarterfinals and then rallied to knock off Caruana, 14-12, in the semifinals. Lakat beat the Michael Riechmann of Texas, 10-8, in the quarters and likewise had to rally against a Longhorn ? Harrison Scott ? in the semis to win, 11-9, and set up the Bear vs. Bear final.
As part of his victory, Griffith earned a wild-card entry into a USTA pro circuit tournament.

Cal will send players to two tournaments, with one group playing in the UCSB Gaucho Classic from Oct. 9-11 in Santa Barbara, California. Meanwhile, Andre Goransson, Florian Lakat and Filip Bergevi will play in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa. Lakat and Goransson earned spots in main draw singles and as a duo in main draw doubles; the main draws run Oct. 8-12. Bergevi will attempt to reach main draw singles when he competes in the qualifying singles draw, which is slated for Oct. 5-7.
