Billy Griffith won the biggest title of his young college career on Sunday when the Golden Bear sophomore defeated teammate
Florian Lakat, 10-6, in the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic singles final at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
“It was an amazing feeling winning the tournament,” Griffith said.
Griffith's morning began with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Stanford's David Wilczynski to take group four with a 3-0 record. Lakat, a junior, beat George Goldhoff of Texas, 7-6(5), 6-2, to win group one with a 3-0 record.
A third Bear, Mads Engsted, also reached the singles playoff, dubbed the Solinco Wild-Card Shootout. The Cal senior lost his Sunday group seven match to USTA junior William Howells, 6-4, 6-0, to tie Stanford's Michael Genender with 2-1 group records. But Engsted had the tiebreaker, having beaten Genender, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), earlier in the tournament.
In the shootout ? featuring the eight group winners ? Engsted lost in his first match, 10-3, to the Longhorns' Liam Caruana. Griffith defeated Baylor's Will Little, 10-7, in the quarterfinals and then rallied to knock off Caruana, 14-12, in the semifinals. Lakat beat the Michael Riechmann of Texas, 10-8, in the quarters and likewise had to rally against a Longhorn ? Harrison Scott ? in the semis to win, 11-9, and set up the Bear vs. Bear final.
“In my semis match, I saved about five match points and was pretty tired but just kept playing the next point and fighting,” Griffith said. “And then it's always hard playing a teammate, but at least we were playing in the finals, so Cal was guaranteed a win.”
As part of his victory, Griffith earned a wild-card entry into a USTA pro circuit tournament.
“It's definitely exciting earning a wild card into the futures, and I can't wait for the opportunity to compete against some great players. It was a great tournament here in Napa, and I had a lot of fun playing in it.”
Cal hosted the 15th annual tournament at Meadowood, whose director of tennis, Doug King, co-founded the tournament with Cal head coach Peter Wright.
“Just a fantastic performance from our entire team in Napa,” Wright said. “Billy and Florian made it to the finals with undefeated records. The Solinco USTA Wild-Card Shootout was incredibly exciting with both Florian and Billy facing match points against them in the semifinals. It's encouraging to see our team playing at such a high level this early in the season.”
TIBURON, Calif. ? Filip Bergevi was hoping to join fellow Cal junior Andre Goransson in the main draw of the $100,000 Wells Fargo Tiburon Challenger on Monday. But the Golden Bear lost to seventh-seeded Marcos Giron ? the 2014 NCAA champion for UCLA who's now a professional player ? 7-6(3), 6-1, in the qualifying round of 16 on Sunday to end his run at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.
Goransson will take on a qualifier to be determined in his opening match of the tournament on Monday.
