Cal Sweeps Singles on Day 2 at Meadowood

ST. HELENA, Calif. ? California won all five of its singles matches on Saturday in the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic on the second day of the competition at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.

The Golden Bears are the hosts of the invitational event, which includes a round-robin, 32-player singles tournament. There are eight groups composed of four players each. After playing three matches apiece, the winner of each of the groups qualifies for Sunday's playoff, which determines the champion. Besides the title, the champ claims wild-card entry into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament.

On Saturday, Cal collected three-set singles wins from senior Oskar Wikberg ? who topped Florida's Elliott Orkin, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-0 ? senior Mads Engsted, who beat Stanford's Michael Genender, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), and junior Florian Lakat, a 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 victor over Florida's Diego Hidalgo. Cal's J.T. Nishimura won in straight sets over Princeton's Luke Gamble, 7-5, 6-2, and fellow sophomore Billy Griffith triumphed over Florida's Gordon Watson, 6-3, 6-2.

Lakat leads group two with a 2-0 record, Griffith likewise has a 2-0 record to lead group four, and Engsted (2-0) heads group seven. Wikberg has a 1-1 record in group three, and Nishimura is also 1-1 in group six.

In doubles, however, Cal lost all of its matches on Saturday, including a match in which Griffith paired with Stanford's Roy Lederman. The Bay Area duo lost to Michael Reichmann and Harrison Scott of Texas, 6-2.

The Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic ends on Sunday.

TIBURON, Calif. ? Cal junior Filip Bergevi advanced to the round of 16 with a victory over Maxime Tchoutakian, 7-6(5), 6-3, in his qualifying singles opener in the $100,000 Wells Fargo Tiburon Challenger. Former Golden Bear teammate Ben McLachlan lost in the round of 32 to Dennis Nevolo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Qualifying concludes on Monday. The main draw ? with Cal junior Andre Goransson set to face a qualifier in his opening match ? begins later on Monday.
