California Head Coach Sonny Dykes
General comments:
“It was good to get a win, a good team win. I thought we were a bit shaky early in the ball game. They had a really nice drive and scored on us. When someone does that, I look to the sideline to see how our players are responding, and our guys were steady and never panicked. We knew it was going to be a tough game coming in. This is a very well-coached football team. They always play hard. Their back is very good. He can do a lot of things coming out of the backfield. We knew it was going to be challenge, but they did a good job, like I said, never panicked, which is very encouraging. We never got into a great flow offensively but you have to give San Diego State a lot of credit. With what they do up front, you just never know what you're going to see. It's hard to predict what you're going to get, but we made some plays. The turnover and the drive at the end of the first half were critical. To start the third quarter like we did was an important play, as well. It was great to see our defense play like we did. I'm proud of those guys and the coaches.”
On running the football:
“SDSU is a big physical football team. These guys are built that way. Our backs ran hard. Daniel ran hard. Vic ran hard. You know Vic had that fourth down run that was a great effort. They had him down stopped short of a first down and he just kept grinding his feet and converted for us. I think our offensive line played physical and those guys had good protection up front, as well. They did a good job picking up blitzes. It was not a really flashy performance but kind of more work-man like, which is a fun way to win. Almost like old fashion football.”
On the defense:
“I think it means we're better, but the competition is going to get better week in and week out and we know that. But the guys are playing with confidence. We have depth. We can roll out a lot of players. I'm really encouraged with those guys. We can stay fresh by rolling nine or 10 new guys out there at a time.”
On what's it like to watch the offense when it's on a roll:
“It's fun to watch. Unfortunately, we didn't get on a roll as much as we'd like today. Again, you've got to give San Diego State credit, but you know when we're on a roll and playing fast we can move the football and score some points pretty quickly.”
On preparing for Pumphrey:
“They come off the ball, they're going to play physical football and try and knock you off the ball. He's allusive. I mean he hits the hole down hill and as quick as any running back you'll see. He does a good job of squaring his pads and getting them across the line of scrimmage. He finishes runs well for a smaller running back. He's really powerful. I was really impressed by him. I was more impressed with him in person than I was on film, and he was good on film. He had a little more quickness. It took our guys a series or two to get adjusted, but credit to our guys for getting adjusted and really playing him well after that first drive.”
On what it would mean to beat Texas:
“We play one game a week and that's the next one. Our guys like playing on the road. I think if you ask our players if they would rather play a home or road game, I think it'd be pretty close. Our guys just enjoy being together. It would mean a lot to get off to a 3-0 start. It would be big because that's a traditional powerhouse that has a lot of players. It'd be a great environment and I think our players are going to enjoying playing there.
Jared Goff
On Texas next week:
“It's going to be a good game on the big stage and nationally televised with a good Texas team. They're really talented with good players and good coaches. It's going to be a good test for us.”
On being 15 yards from the career passing record:
“Hopefully I get it next game pretty early, but again, it's not something I'm thinking about. I'm going to prepare and try to beat Texas, and let all that stuff happen like it does.”
Trevor Davis
On being a big part of the offense:
“It feels great. I came back and I'm better than I was before, so it feels great.”
On the defense's performance:
“It was definitely a rush seeing them getting so many turnovers on defense. It's a total change of moods lately and it definitely helps us a lot.”
Michael Barton
On win today:
“Its definitely a confidence booster. We came in and executed our game plan. The defensive line put the pressure on. We just did our job, and it was good to have our defense carry us through the game and have the offense feed off our energy instead of the other way. I think we came out and executed our game plan well. Our veteran leadership showed a lot, and plenty of times we made big plays when we needed to. I think that it really carried us through the game and gave us a lot of confidence going into Texas.“
On the first touchdown:
“We just stayed calm and made sure we stuck with our game plan. Once we were able to settle down a little bit and make some adjustments, we were able to make some plays and we were able to adapt to what they did. I think we adjusted well.”
Darius White
On work and improvement this offseason:
“We just picked up our game. This offseason we worked harder than we ever have. We became closer as a team. We just worked harder on our technique and were on a mission to be greater than our former self every day. We came together as a team.”
San Diego State Head Coach Rocky Long
General comments:
“Right after halftime we had a terrible assignment error on a coverage, and on the first play of the second half, they scored. Right after that, I think that they did pretty much what they wanted to do on offense, but they didn't score points. The real problem is you can't expect to beat anyone if you only score seven points.”
On his thoughts on the offensive performance:
“We made way too many mistakes. We had way too many penalties and personal fouls on both sides of the ball. The personal fouls on both sides of the ball are the sign of an immature football team. That's my fault to get that many penalties on offense. That's a coach's error. That's a lack of disciplined football.”
On if the issues were quarterback mistakes:
“There were a couple for sure that were quarterback issues and poor decisions by the quarterback. When you throw it in there and there are three defensive guys standing there, that's a real poor decision. Sometimes you throw the ball in an area that the receiver is supposed to be and he's not there.”
On the two quarterback situation:
“We didn't think we gave Christian Chapman enough opportunities last week to be an experienced backup quarterback, if that's what he's going to be or to be a starting quarterback. We want to see both in live action against an opponent because we have a lot of games to play, and our number one goal is to win a conference championship. If you can't win this one, you might as well see how they go against very good competition. It was all planned when he was going to go in. It didn't matter what the score was at that time.”
On the differences between Maxwell Smith and Christian Chapman:
“I didn't see much difference between the two of them. They both threw interceptions and they both had some passes dropped. We have some questions on who the quarterback is going to be or if we're going to play two of them. Maybe we'll play two of them.”
