AUSTIN, Texas - For the second straight season, California's run in the NCAA team tournament ended with a 4-1 loss to Texas. The 26th-ranked Golden Bears wind up with a 19-9 record after Saturday's NCAA round of 32 match at the Caswell Tennis Center.
The ninth-seeded and ninth-ranked Longhorns improved to 21-5 and advanced to the NCAA round of 16 in Waco, Texas. Last season, Texas beat Cal, 4-1, in the NCAA round of 16.
On Saturday, senior Gregory Bayane posted Cal's lone win, as he upset the Longhorn's 54th-ranked Adrien Berkowicz, 7-5, 6-3, at court-three singles.
Texas clinched the doubles point when Cal's pair of junior Mads Engsted and sophomore Filip Bergevi lost to Nick Naumann and Michael Riechmann, 8-7(2), on court three.
Down 3-1 after Bayane won in singles, the Bears lost the overall match when 29th-ranked Cal sophomore Andre Goransson fell to fourth-ranked Søren Hess-Olesen, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, on court one.
“Our guys gave it their all today,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Texas is a very physical team, and we felt we created some good opportunities. It was great to see Gregory Bayane finish his career with a singles win, and it was wonderful to have our three seniors here for this match.
“Greg, Chase Melton and Nikhil Jayashankar have been stellar team members of our team, and they are all graduating and moving on to the next stages of their lives. They are all great examples of what it takes to be a Cal tennis player.”
Goransson will extend Cal's season when he plays in the NCAA Singles Championship starting May 20 in Waco.
