OJAI, Calif. – Six days after
Billy Griffith beat Nolan Paige to give California men's tennis a 4-3 win at Stanford in the regular-season finale, Griffith fell to Paige in the Pac-12 Championship's Friday semifinal round to clinch top-seeded and 26th-ranked Stanford's 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded and 25th-ranked Cal.
The Golden Bear freshman, playing at court-five singles, lost to Paige, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, at Libbey Park. Junior Oskar Wikberg scored Cal's point by beating Robert Stineman, 6-4, 6-3, on court four.
Cal could have picked up more points with potential wins on singles court one – on which the Bears' 29th-ranked sophomore Andre Goransson was tied in a third-set tiebreaker with Tom Fawcett – and court three – on which Cal senior Gregory Bayane led David Wilczynski, 3-0, in the third set. But both matches were abandoned once Stanford clinched the overall match.
Earlier in doubles, the rivals each won a match to leave court two to decide the doubles point. But the Bears lost the point when Wikberg and sophomore Filip Bergevi dropped an 8-7 result to Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz on court two.
“It was a tough match today that was well within our grasp,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We put ourselves into good positions on almost every court, and I think we played some great tennis. Overall, I think we're very close to the level we need to be playing at the NCAAs in two weeks. Our guys are super excited about what lies ahead for us in the postseason.”
Cal's record now stands at 18-8. Stanford – which advances to Saturday's conference final – is 18-5.
The rivals split their two regular-season matches, as the Cardinal beat the Golden Bears, 4-3, on Feb. 21 in Berkeley.
Cal now awaits the April 28 announcement of the field for the NCAA team tournament.
