No. 30 Cal Tames Wildcats to Open Pac-12 Season
BERKELEY – Gregory Bayane won his court-three singles match to clinch No. 30 California's 4-0 victory over Arizona in their Pac-12 Conference opener on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Bayane, a senior, beat Jason Jaruvang, 6-3, 6-4, on Mascarin Court.
The Golden Bears improved to 13-5 (1-0 in the Pac-12), while the Wildcats fell to 8-12 (0-1 Pac-12).
Cal junior Oskar Wikberg and Swedish compatriot Andre Goransson - ranked 65th in doubles – secured the doubles point for Cal with their 6-1 triumph over Kneale and Sumeet Shinde on court two (Bud Chandler Court).
In singles, Wikberg gave Cal a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kneale on court four (Savides Sullivan Court), and sophomore and 100th-ranked Filip Bergevi followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Mushayev on court two. Bayane then ended the day with his victory.
“We had strong performances throughout our singles and doubles lineup today,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Particularly impressive was the positive energy our guys maintained between doubles and singles. Arizona and Utah are tough teams to play, and we're certainly pleased with our start to the Pac-12 season. Our goal is to continue to develop and improve with every match we play.”
Cal plays its third match in four days when its hosts Utah in another conference match on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
