No. 28 Cal Tops Purdue to Reach Consolation Final
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Twenty eighth-ranked California blanked Purdue, 5-0, on Saturday morning in the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle to advance to the consolation final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. In Sunday's 1 p.m. consolation final, the Golden Bears play the winner of the Tulsa-Baylor semifinal, which starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Cal improved its record to 10-5, while Purdue fell to 4-9.
Sophomore Andre Goransson – ranked 67th in singles – defeated Purdue's Diego Acosta, 7-5, 6-0, to clinch the match at 4-0. Junior Oskar Wikberg beat Arthur Dobradin, 6-3, 6-1, on court four just seconds later to make the score 5-0.
Earlier, after the teams split the first two doubles matches, Cal clinched the doubles point when the team of sophomore Filip Bergevi and junior Mads Engsted edged Dobradin and Renan Hanayama in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5), on court two.
“After a very close doubles point, our guys came out playing focused in the singles,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “It was great to see our guys playing with confidence throughout the singles. We continue to work on improving our doubles as the doubles point often sets the tone for our matches.”
