Cal Beats Gaels in First Half of Doubleheader
BERKELEY – Fourteenth-ranked California was efficient in defeating Saint Mary's, 4-0, on Sunday morning at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The 8-3 Golden Bears – who also host UC Santa Barbara at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday – needed roughly one hour and 45 minutes to dispatch the Gaels, whose record fell to 1-7.
Cal clinched the doubles point when the 30th-ranked pair of seniors Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane knocked off Arthur Weber and Alex Hunt, 6-4, on court one (Newmark Stadium).
In singles, Bayane made the score 2-0 when he quickly beat Hunt on court three (Mascarin Court), 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Billy Griffith followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Samuel Bloore on court two (Bud Chandler Court), and junior Oskar Wikberg ended the competition with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wil Martin on court four (Savides Sullivan Court).
