Goransson Plays For Indoor Title Sunday

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Andre Goransson joined lofty company in the annals of California men's tennis when he won his Saturday singles semifinal at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to advance to Sunday's final. The junior is just the third Golden Bear to reach the singles championship match at national indoors, and he's seeking to become the first Bear to win the championship.

Goransson claimed another laurel on Saturday when he claimed the tournament's Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the coaches.

A product of Hollviken, Sweden, the 22nd-seeded Goransson defeated Georgia Tech's 24th-ranked Christopher Eubanks, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5, in the semifinal at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

“Today's match was exciting because both players use their serves and powerful ground strokes to dominate,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “It took Andre almost a full set to figure out how to return Eubanks' serve, and after that he had much more success in the return games. Eubanks is a tough competitor and he hit a lot of winners in the second set. Andre got behind in the third but kept his poise and fought through being down 0-40 late in the third to claim the victory. A gutsy performance today.”

“(Eubanks) has a really big game, so at first I was just trying to be aware that when I get opportunities, I need to take advantage of them, because there aren't going to be many,” Goransson said. "In the first set, I got some opportunities in the last two games and took advantage of them. In the second set, he came out strong and I didn't make as many first serves and that gave him more chances to come in. In the third set, I was able to break back quickly and ended the match on a break.”

In Sunday's final, Goransson will face a familiar opponent in Tulane's third-seeded and 10th-ranked Dominik Koepfer, who handed the Cal star the lone loss of his 13-1 record this season. Goransson lost, 6-4, 6-4, to the Green Wave player in the semifinals of the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships in October.

The final will be broadcast by ESPN3 and WatchESPN, available at WatchESPN.com. The NIIC broadcast will feature Patrick McEnroe and Stephen Amritraj as the on-air talent. Finals coverage gets underway at 10 a.m. ET.

The last Bear to reach the singles final was Steve DeVries – who lost to USC's Luke Jensen, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 – in 1987.  Cal alumnus Michael Bauer fell to Arkansas' Chip Hooper in the 1981 title match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

The Bears wound up sweeping the two Sportsmanship Awards at national indoors, as Cal's Maegan Manasse earned the women's honor on Saturday.

“Winning the Sportsmanship Award is testament to how well Andre is liked by his peers, other coaches and the officials,” Wright said. “He's not only a class act on the court, but he's a joy to be around off the court. He's a wonderful representative of the team and our University.”
