BERKELEY ? Action at the 2015 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships has already begun, with three Golden Bears competing in that prestigious tournament this week in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Another Cal contingent remains in the Golden State to play in the UCSB Classic.

Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions at the All-American Championships will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 12-15, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The 64th-ranked Filip Bergevi opened qualifying singles at the All-American on Monday. Seeded eighth and ranked 64th, Bergevi defeated Denver's David Fox, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 128. The Cal junior takes on Northwestern's Konrad Zieba on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Central Time in the round of 64.

Joining Bergevi at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center are juniors Andre Goransson ? ranked 22nd in singles ? and Florian Lakat, ranked 36th. The two ? who are ranked 25th in doubles ? will play in main draw singles and main draw doubles, which are slated for Oct. 8-12. This is the 11th consecutive year in which the University of Tulsa is hosting the tournament. Some All-American qualifying matches are also taking place at Union High School in Tulsa.

The UCSB Classic will bring Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Fresno State, UC Davis and LMU to Santa Barbara, California, for the Gauchos' fourth annual tournament.

Cal Success at the All-American

Cal has won the singles championship twice and the doubles crown once at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. Scott McCain captured the tournament's first singles championship in 1979, upsetting the top-seeded Jay Lapidus of Princeton, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. In 1985, Steve DeVries upset USC's fifth-seeded Rick Leach in the final, 6-3, 6-3, and DeVries reached the singles final again in 1986 but lost to SMU's top-seeded Richey Renenberg, 6-4, 6-4. John Paul Fruttero reached the 2000 singles semifinals, and Conor Niland got to the quarterfinals in 2002.

In doubles, Cal's second-seeded pair of Woody Hunt and Ted Scherman fell in the 1988 doubles final to UCLA's top-seeded Patrick Galbraith and Brian Garrow, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Bears claimed their first All-American doubles crown the following year, when Doug Eisenman and Matt Lucena upset Stanford's top-seeded Jared Palmer and Jonathan Stark for the championship.

Last Year at the All-American

Cal completed its run at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Oct. 4 when Gregory Bayane?and?Chase Melton?suffered an upset loss in the consolation doubles quarterfinal round. The fourth-seeded and seventh-ranked Golden Bears fell to N.C. State's Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(9), at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Andre Goransson earned a spot in main draw singles, losing to Duke's Nicolas Alvarez, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, in the opening round of 64. Melton and Bayane fell in main draw doubles' opening round of 32 to Texas A&M's Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8).

Last Year at UC Santa Barbara

California walked away with three titles from the 2014 UCSB Classic with?Mads Engsted?winning in singles and doubles on Oct 12. The Golden Bear won the flight A singles crown over teammate?Hasier Pastor, and the Bears captured two doubles crowns on the final day of the three-day invitational.

Engsted topped Pastor, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2. Also in flight A, J.T. Nishimura?finished fourth after falling to the Gauchos' Tobias Galskov, 6-4, 6-3, in the third-place match.

In doubles, the pair of Nishimura and Chase Melton?beat UCSB's Galskov/Ziad Sultan, 8-3, for the flight A title, and the tandem of Engsted and Wyatt Houghton?defeated Fresno State's Youssef Hassan/Sai Kartik Nakireddi, 8-7, in the flight B final.
