Cal-Washington State Postgame Notes
With today's 34-28 Cal win, the Golden Bears have improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2007, and it's best start since the 1950 squad won its first nine games.
Jared Goff set the school record for career touchdown passes, now with 68, surpassing the mark of 64 by Kyle Boller (1999-2002). He always owns the school-record with 9,111 career passing yards, as well. Goff completed 33-of-45 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns. It was his fifth career game of four touchdowns or more. He garnered his 20th career multi-passing touchdown performance. He also recorded his 22nd 250-yard passing performance and his 16th 300-yard performance, both school records. On the season, Goff has completed 125 of his 178 attempts (.702) for 1,630 yards. His touchdown-to-interception ratio this season is 15-4.
Kenny Lawler has caught a pass in every game he's played at Cal (28). Lawler finished the day with six catches for 105 yards and two touchdown receptions. It was Lawler's eighth career multi-receiving touchdown performance and his third career 100-yard receiving performance. With Lawler's touchdown catches today, he now has 22 for his career, which ranks tied for fourth all-time at Cal. His eight receiving touchdowns this season ranks tied for seventh on the school's single-season list.
Cal boasted 7.0 sacks on the day after entering the day ranked tied for first in the nation in sacks. The 7.0 sacks are the most Cal has recorded as a team since 2005 against Stanford. After recording 1.5 sacks last week, Kyle Kragen record 2.5 sacks on the day, a career high. James Looney and Stefan McClure garnered their first career sacks. Jalen Jefferson and Mustafa Jalil also notched sacks.
Cal's defense forced four turnovers on the day, giving the Bears 18 on the season, which ranked first in the nation coming into the game. Darius Allensworth caused a fumble on a fake punt attempt by Washington State that was recovered by Stefan McClure and returned for a touchdown. It was Cal's first special teams touchdown since Trevor Davis returned two kick returns for touchdowns since last year's WSU game. The last time Cal returned a fumble for a touchdown was on Sept. 3, 2011, Trevor Guyton against Fresno State.
The second Cal turnover was Darius White's first forced fumble of his career that was recovered by Michael Barton, the first of his career. Cal entered the game tied for second in fumble recoveries. The third turnover was Damariay Drew's second career interception. He garnered his first INT in the fourth quarter last week at Washington. The fourth turnover was a fumble recovery by James Looney on the final play of the game.
The Bears have recorded at least one interception in every game this season and have 10 on the season following the one interception today. Cal entered the game tied for first in the nation in interceptions.
Bryce Treggs has caught a pass in 37 of the last 38 games that he has played in and his last 31 contests in a row. Treggs also hauled in his second touchdown pass of the season, second in as many games. He tied his dad in career receptions, now with 167, which ranks tied for fifth all-time at Cal.
