SEATTLE – California ended its campaign at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sunday, when the Golden Bears fell in the quarterfinals at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Top-seeded junior Florian Lakat, who's also ranked 36th in singles, lost in an upset to Stanford's fifth-ranked David Wilczynski, 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore and No. 9 seed Billy Griffith lost to Washington's second-seeded and 62nd-ranked Mitch Stewart, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In the doubles main draw quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded pair of junior Filip Bergevi and sophomore J.T. Nishimura lost to Oregon's third-seeded and 60th-ranked Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens, 8-7(2).
The Bears were attempting to join junior Andre Goransson and qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November in New York. Goransson qualified for national indoors in singles with his semifinal appearance at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships earlier in October. Cal players could still earn at-large berths in singles and/or doubles to national indoors.
The Bears lost just one set in winning all four of their consolation singles matches on Sunday in Seattle. Three Cal seniors won, with Oskar Wikberg topping Fresno State's Nikolas Papic, 7-5, 7-5, Jordan Smith beating Sacramento State's Uli Vollath, 7-6(4), 3-6, 1-0(5), and Wyatt Houghton defeating Washington's Kawika Lam, 6-1, 6-4. Also, freshman Ryan Shen beat Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith, 6-4, 7-6(5).
In Saturday consolation singles at the Seattle Tennis Club, two Bears lost on super tiebreakers. Senior Jordan Smith lost to Eastern Washington's Wacil Bendjelti, 6-2, 6-7(6), 1-0(8), and freshman Gunther Matta fell to San Francisco's Ryan Marker, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(3).
