SEATTLE –California's Florian Lakat and Billy Griffith each won twice in main draw singles on Saturday – the third day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships – at the Nordstrom Tennis Center to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals. The Cal pair of Filip Bergevi and J.T. Nishimura also reached the doubles quarterfinals with a win in the main draw on Saturday.

The Golden Bears are attempting to qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships next month in New York, by winning the singles and/or doubles titles in Seattle.

Lakat – a junior who's the top seed at the regional is also ranked 36th in the ITA preseason poll – defeated 17th-seeded Brett Bacharach of UC Davis, 6-4, 7-5, in Saturday's round of 32 before topping Washington's ninth-seeded Enzo Sommer, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 16. Griffith, another No. 9 seed, started his Saturday with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Portland's 17th-seeded Michail Pervolarakis in the round of 32, and then the Cal sophomore upset Stanford's fifth-seeded and 96th-ranked David Hsu, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16.

Cal had four more Bears playing in the singles round of 32 on Saturday. That included third-seeded and 64th-ranked junior Filip Bergevi as well as 17th-seeded sophomore Nishimura, who each won his first singles match of the day. Bergevi bested Oregon's 17th-seeded Simon Stevens, 6-3, 6-7(10), 6-2, while Nishimura beat Stanford's ninth-seeded Sameer Kumar, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

But ninth-seeded senior Oskar Wikberg lost – to Stanford's 17th-seeded Maciek Romanowicz, 6-3, 6-4 – as did senior Mads Engsted, another No. 17 seed, who fell to another Cardinal player, and another No. 9 seed, Michael Genender, 6-4, 7-6.

The round of 16 featured yet another Cal-Stanford clash between Bergevi and 17th-seeded Nolan Paige, Bergevi falling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Nishimura took on Washington's 17th-seeded Gal Hakak in the round of 16, losing, 6-2, 6-0.

Cal suffered an upset in the doubles round of 16, as the top-seeded and 25th-ranked duo of Lakat and junior Andre Goransson lost, 8-3, in an upset to Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitelis. The team of Bergevi and Nishimura – one of four No. 5 seeds – beat Alec Adamson and James Wade of UC Davis, 8-3, to move on to the quarters.
