Cal Nets 6 Singles Wins on Regional Day 2
SEATTLE – Top-seeded senior Florian Lakat was one of six Golden Bears to post a victory in the singles main draw on Friday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships. After sitting out Thursday's first round with a bye, the 36th-ranked California junior topped Portland State's Scott Goldner, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 64 on day two of the tournament.
The University of Washington is the host of the tournament. The Bears' Friday matches took place at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Eastside Tennis Center.
Cal won six out of a total seven singles matches in Friday's round of 64, including third-seeded and 64th-ranked junior Filip Bergevi beating Portland's Carlos Donat, 6-1, 6-2, ninth-seeded senior Oskar Wikberg defeating Seattle University's Ian Clare, 6-1, 7-5, ninth-seeded sophomore Billy Griffith beating Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith, 6-2, 6-2, 17th-seeded senior Mads Engsted knocked off Oregon's Bart Sawicki, 6-3, 7-6(4), and 17th-seeded sophomore J.T. Nishimura besting Fresno State's Nikolas Papic, 6-3, 6-1.
The six Bears play in Saturday's round of 32.
Also in the round of 64, Cal freshman Ryan Shen fell to Oregon's Jayson Amos, 7-6(6), 6-0.
In a doubles round of 64 match on Friday, the pair of Griffith and senior Wyatt Houghton beat Portland's Pierre Garcia and Felix Fan, 8-2. In the doubles round of 32 on Friday, the pair of Lakat and junior Andre Goransson – ranked 25th and seeded No. 1 – beat Portland's Jamie Fisher and Goutham Sundaram, 8-4, the duo of Bergevi and Nishimura notched an 8-3 win over Washington's Gal Hakak and Sebastian Hawken, 8-3, and the team of Griffith and Houghton lost to Pacific's Miguel Diaz and Sem Verbeek, 8-6.
The five-day tournament continues on Sunday.
