RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – California completed the second day of hidden dual matches on Saturday evening at the Morgan Run Club & Resort, as light rain delayed the completion of the singles matches. The Golden Bears captured 12 matches and lost nine in the competition hosted by the University of San Diego.
Sophomore Andre Goransson – ranked 106th – notched a big upset. The Swede beat Texas A&M's 45th-ranked Shane Vinsant, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, in the afternoon, after falling to Notre Dame's Quentin Monaghan, 7-6(3), 6-2, in his first match. Cal's other nationally ranked sophomore – the 93rd-ranked Filip Bergevi – lost his only match of the day, falling to Vinsant, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Hasier Pastor, junior Mads Engsted and senior Nikhil Jayashankar led the Bears with two wins apiece on Saturday, as they each posted 2-0 records. Pastor beat Texas A&M's Jett Cash, 6-1, 6-1, then topped Notre Dame's Drew Dawson, 6-4, 6-4. Engsted defeated two Irish players – Nicholas Montoya, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, and Brendon Kempin, 7-5, 6-1.
Jayashankar triumphed in his first match, beating Notre Dame's Michael Fredericka, 6-1, 6-4, then the Golden Bear ended his day with a win over USD's Patrick Hall, 6-2, 6-2.
The competition ends on Sunday with one round of singles and one round of doubles. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. PT, weather permitting.
