Cal-Sacramento State Postgame Notes

With today's 55-14 victory by California over Sacramento State on Saturday, the Golden Bears (2-0) have now won 11 of their last 13 home openers. Cal also improved to 2-0 all-time against Sacramento State with the first meeting ending with a 41-3 Cal win in 2005 in Berkeley. The 55 points scored are the most points scored by Cal in the Sonny Dykes era. The previous best was 37 scored against Portland State in 2013.

Kenny Lawler caught his second and third touchdowns of 2014 and the seventh and eighth of his career in the first quarter, including one on Cal's opening drive. It was his third career multi-touchdown game. Lawler ended the game with 3 catches for 34 yards and two touchdowns.

The last time Cal held a 28-0 lead was against Presbyterian in 2011. The last time Cal scored 28 points in the first quarter was against Arizona in 2007. The 28 points scored in the quarter tied for the fourth-most points scored in any quarter in school history and tied for the second most in a first quarter. The 45 points scored in the first half tied for second all-time at Cal. The school record is 51 points in the first half (Pacific, 1991).

For the second straight game, Cal scored on its' opening drive of the game. The Bears' first drive was 14 plays after a 18-play opening drive last week at Northwestern.

On the ensuring Cal drive, Goff hit Maurice Harris in the corner of the endzone for a 17-yard touchdown reception. It was the third career touchdown for Harris.

Goff now has eight career multi-touchdown performances and five games with three or more touchdowns. He finished the day completing 17 of 22 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns, which tied his career high. His fourth touchdown pass was a 12-yarder to Chris Harper, his first touchdown reception of the year and the eighth of his career. Harper was Cal's leading receiver on the day with five catches for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Luke Rubenzer hit Darius Powe for a career-high 60-yard touchdown reception. It was Rubenzer's first career touchdown pass, and it was Powe's third career touchdown reception.

In the second quarter, Rubenzer scored his first rushing touchdown from one yard out.

Griffin Piatt snagged his second career interception in as many games. He led the team in tackles with five.

Jake Kearney picked up his first career tackle for loss in the second quarter. Devante Downs garnered his first career sack in the second quarter.

Todd Barr caused his second career fumble and it was recovered by Ray Davison, his first career fumble recovery, in the first quarter.

Daniel Lasco picked up his fourth career rushing touchdown on a 50-yard run in the second quarter. He finished the day with nine carries for 94 yards – a personal best - and a touchdown.

James Langford finished the day with 13 points (seven extra points and two field goals). He was good on two of his three field goal attempts (33, 47) today and his now 3-for-4 on the year. The 47-yarder is his season best thus far.

In the first-half scoring between the first two games, Cal has outscored its opponents, 76-14. Cal led Northwestern, 31-7, at halftime and the Bears led Sacramento State, 45-7, at halftime today.
