TULSA, Okla. – California split its four matches on the first day of qualifying singles on Monday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships. Sophomore Andre Goransson and junior Oskar Wikberg – making his Golden Bear debut – won on the hard courts at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The Bears also dropped two matches in the qualifying singles consolation bracket.

Wikberg, a transfer from Wisconsin who earned a Nos. 25-32 seed, edged Mississippi State's Julian Cash after an already long match went to a third-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(10). Goransson knocked off N.C. State's Ian Dempster, 6-1, 6-4.

Sophomore Filip Bergevi – one of three Cal Swedes (along with Goransson and Wikberg) in Tulsa – played Oklahoma State's seventh-seeded Jakob Sude to a tight first set before falling 7-6(5). The OSU Cowboy completed his win by taking the second set, 6-4.

Senior Gregory Bayane, a doubles specialist, lost to Tulsa's Nos. 17-24 seeded Alejandro Espejo, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Bayane and senior Chase Melton will play in main draw doubles later in the week at the All-American.

Bayane and Bergevi moved into the qualifying consolation singles bracket, with those matches played at Union High School in Tulsa. Bergevi fell to LSU's Tam Trinh, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, while Bayane lost to Indiana's Daniel Bednarcyzk, 6-2, 6-4.

The All-American Championships continue on Tuesday with second- and third-round action in qualifying singles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. After the third round on Wednesday, eight players will advance from qualifying singles to main draw singles, which start on Thursday.
