Cal Tops USTA Juniors, 8-4, in Hellman Opener

BERKELEY – Playing in the first competition at the Hellman Tennis Complex since the completion of much of the facility's renovation, the California men's tennis team defeated the USTA Junior National Team, 8-4, in an exhibition match on Wednesday. Sophomore Filip Bergevi and freshman Billy Griffith led the Golden Bears with wins in singles and doubles.

The Bears trailed the USTA juniors, 3-1, after doubles, with the pair of Griffith and Bergevi winning the lone point for Cal. But the Bears roared back to take seven of eight singles matches to clinch the match. Two of the singles matches took place at the Channing Tennis Courts, with Cal winning both.

While a grand opening of the Hellman Tennis Complex is slated for January 2015, Wednesday's match gave fans the chance to see the new elevated seating and new public restrooms that are now a part of Hellman. The renovation – which began in January 2014 – also included building locker rooms for both the Cal men and the Cal women's tennis team.

Several components of the project are still under construction. They include the new academic/team room, enhanced graphics, design and branding features, as well as donor recognition elements throughout the facility.

The Bears will see the USTA Junior National Team in their next competition – the annual Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic, which rewards its winner with a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament. Cal is the host of the tournament, which head coach Peter Wright co-founded with Meadowood Tennis Director Doug King 14 years ago.

The round-robin tournament will take place from Friday through Sunday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort in St, Helena, California. Texas, Stanford, Tulsa, North Carolina and Harvard are among the college teams joining Cal. The 32-player field will compete in round-robin groups for a spot in Sunday's Solinco USTA Wild Card Shootout, a tiebreaker tournament used to determine the winner and wild-card recipient.
