No. 11 Cal Loses to No. 10 Texas at ITA Indoors
HOUSTON – Eighth-seeded California opened its Sunday match with 13th-seeded Texas at the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships by capturing the doubles point and then taking a 2-0 lead with a win in singles. But the 11th-ranked Golden Bears ultimately fell, 4-2, to the 10th-ranked Longhorns in the consolation bracket at the Downtown Club at the Met.
Cal (6-2 record) ended its run at ITA indoors with today's loss to Texas (9-2).
“Winning the doubles point today put us in a great spot going into singles,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said, “but we failed to convert in the tiebreakers today, and that ended up being the difference. Texas did a good job of keeping the pressure on us. We've got a young team, and they got a lot of valuable experience this weekend.”
The Bears' pair of senior Ben McLachlan and freshman Andre Goransson beat Soren Hess-Olesen Lloyd Glasspool, 6-3, on court one to open doubles. 2: Cal juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton then clinched the doubles point with a 6-5(1) victory over Nick Naumann/George Goldhoff.
Freshman Filip Bergevi gave Cal a 2-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-2 court-three win over George Goldhoff.
But things went downhill from there for the Bears.
McLachlan, ranked 62nd in singles, lost to the 53rd-ranked Hess-Olsesen, 6-2, 6-3, on court one, 69th-ranked senior Campbell Johnson lost to the 29th-ranked Glasspool, 6-2, 6-3, on court two, No. 118 Goransson lost to Adrien Berkowicz, 6-4, 6-5(3) and, to end the match, Bayane fell to Naumann, 6-5(3), 6-4 on court five. The court-six match between Cal sophomore Mads Engsted and the Longhorns' David Holiner was abandoned in the third set.
Cal returns to action when it plays at Stanford on Feb. 22.
