Bears Fall in Regional Doubles Final
STANFORD, Calif. – A fifth straight doubles title – and a trip to New York – was not to be for California, as Golden Bear junior Oskar Wikberg and sophomore Andre Goransson lost in the Tuesday morning final at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cal tandem was attempting to claim a berth in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. But that spot went to San Francisco's Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa, who upset the third-seeded Bears, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0(6).
“Andre and Oskar have great chemistry together on the court and a wonderful fighting spirit,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Today we got outplayed in the third-set tiebreaker, but for our guys it was a very solid tournament, and it was a great effort for their first time playing together.”
The result left the duo's record at 4-1.
Cal players could still gain entry in doubles and singles into the indoor intercollegiate – which runs Nov. 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, New York – by way of at-large berths or wild card spots.
A Cal pair had won the regional doubles title in each of the previous four years: Nick Andrews/Christoffer Konigsfeldt won the championship in 2010, Ben McLachlan/Carlos Cueto captured the 2011 title, Ben and Riki McLachlan took home the 2012 trophy, and seniors Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane won the 2013 crown.
The Bears next compete in the Gael Classic slated for Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Saint Mary's in Moraga, California.
