STANFORD, Calif. – California's Oskar Wikberg and Andre Goransson won on Sunday to secure a berth in Monday's doubles semifinals at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships. The third-seeded Golden Bears blanked Portland State's Matthew Pronesti and Stuart Tierney, 8-0, in the quarterfinal round at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Monday could have featured an all-Cal semifinal, but the Bears' fifth-seeded duo of junior Mads Engsted and sophomore Filip Bergevi fell to Washington's second-seeded and 21st-ranked Emmett Egger/Jeffrey Hawke, 8-7(3), in the quarters.

Goransson, a sophomore, and Wikberg, a junior, play the Huskies at 1 p.m. in Monday's semis.

Top-seeded and seventh-ranked Cal seniors Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane suffered an upset in the quarters to San Francisco's fifth-seeded Bernardo Saraiva/Nils Skajaa, 8-7(5). Also, Cal's 17th-seeded freshman J.T. Nishimura fell in Sunday's singles quarterfinal round to Stanford's ninth-seeded David Hsu, 6-4, 6-2.

“Having Andre and Oskar in the semifinals of the doubles is a pleasant surprise,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “They played extremely well today, and although we lost our other two matches in tiebreakers, I feel we're in a very good position for the spring season in both singles and doubles.”

The regional ends with singles and doubles finals on Tuesday.

The singles and doubles winners at the 12 regional tournaments taking place around the country automatically qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships slated for Nov. 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, New York.
