SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – California walked away with three titles from the UCSB Classic with Mads Engsted winning in singles and doubles on Sunday. The Golden Bear won the flight A singles crown over teammate Hasier Pastor, and the Bears captured two doubles crowns on the final day of the three-day invitational.
Engsted topped fellow junior Pastor, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2. Also in flight A, freshman J.T. Nishimura finished fourth after falling to the Gauchos' Tobias Galskov, 6-4, 6-3, in the third-place match.
In doubles, the pair of Nishimura and senior Chase Melton beat UCSB's Galskov/Ziad Sultan, 8-3, for the flight A title, and the tandem of Engsted and junior Wyatt Houghton defeated Fresno State's Youssef Hassan/Sai Kartik Nakireddi, 8-7, in the flight B final.
In flight B singles, Houghton topped Grand Canyon's Alex Roggenkamp, 7-5, 6-3, to capture seventh place. Additionally, junior Jordan Smith took fifth place in flight C singles with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over UC Riverside's Sean Robles.
SAN FRANCISCO – Cal's Andre Goransson fell in the singles final at the Battle in the Bay on Sunday, but the Golden Bears walked away from the California Tennis Club with a title as senior Gregory Bayane captured the consolation singles crown.
Goransson, a sophomore seeded third in the University of San Francisco tournament, dropped a three-setter against USC's Nick Crystal in the main draw final, falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the consolation semifinals, Bayane was leading Boise State's Thomas Tenreiro, 6-3, 2-0, when the latter retired with an injury. Bayane defeated UCLA's Austin Rapp, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(7), in the final.
Playing a consolation singles match, junior Oskar Wikberg beat Pacific's Sem Verbeek, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(6).
“We had positive performances from all of our guys this weekend,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Splitting up the team to play half the team in San Francisco and half the team in Santa Barbara allowed us to get valuable matches for all of our guys. We had solid performances across the board with quality results against strong competition. It was perfect preparation for the ITA Regionals next weekend.”
Cal plays in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Oct. 17-21 in Stanford, Calif.
