SAN FRANCISCO – California's Andre Goransson won twice on Saturday to become the lone seeded player to reach the singles semifinals at the Battle in the Bay on Saturday at the California Tennis Club. Seeded third, the sophomore Golden Bear edged freshman teammate Billy Griffith in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
In the round of 16 on Saturday, Goransson beat San Francisco's Nils Skajaa, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, Griffith eliminated Stanford's Robert Stineman, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, and Cal junior Oskar Wikberg – the top seed in singles – fell in an upset to USC's Tanner Smith, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Goransson plays Stanford's David Hsu at 10:30 a.m. in Sunday's semifinals.
In doubles, the top-seeded tandem of Goransson and senior Gregory Bayane lost in an upset to USC's Nick Crystal/Connor Farren, 8-4.
In consolation play, Bayane advanced to the singles semifinals with a round of 16 win over Duke's T.J. Pura, 7-5, 6-4, and a quarterfinal victory over Cal Poly's Corey Pang, 6-4, 6-2. Bayane plays Boise State's Thomas Tenreiro at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Cal sophomore Filip Bergevi – seeded second – fell in an upset in the consolation singles first round to UCLA's Austin Rapp, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(7).
The tandem of Griffith and Bergevi posted an 8-4 win over Pepperdine's Stefan Menichella/Kento Tamaki in voluntary consolation doubles.
The Battle in the Bay ends on Sunday.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal juniors Hasier Pastor and Mads Engsted each won twice on Saturday and next face each other in Sunday's flight A singles final at the UCSB Classic.
The final will mark the second straight match in which Engsted plays a teammate, as he defeated freshman Bear J.T. Nishimura, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals. Also on Saturday, Engsted beat Fresno State's Sai Kartik, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Pastor topped Cal Poly's Garrett Auproux, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarters and UC Santa Barbara's Tobias Galskov, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, in the semis.
Also in the flight A quarterfinals, Nishimura beat the Gauchos' Morgan Mays, 6-4, 6-3, while senior Nikhil Jayashankar fell to LMU's Felix Van Kann, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4), in the consolation singles quarters. Nishimura plays Galskov in Sunday's third-place match.
In the flight A doubles semifinals, the duo of Nishimura and senior Chase Melton moved past Cal Poly's Auproux/Lucas Lesoeur, 8-2, to reach Sunday's final against UCSB's Galskov/Ziad Sultan.
Cal junior Wyatt Houghton fell to the Gauchos' Erik Johnsson, 6-2, 7-5, in the flight B quarterfinals, before losing to UCSB's Nathan Eshmade, 6-4, 6-4, in the placement bracket. Houghton takes on Grand Canyon's Alex Roggenkamp in Sunday's seventh-place match.
The Bears will play for another doubles title on Sunday, as the pair of Engsted and Houghton battles Fresno State's Kartik/Youssef Hassan in the flight B final. The Bears beat Grand Canyon's Phillip Kuehnen/Adrian Legaretta, 8-5, in the semis.
In flight C singles, Cal junior Jordan Smith suffered a 7-5, 6-1, setback against UC San Diego's Alex Miaule in the quarters and then beat UCSB's Chase Masciorini, 6-2, 6-2, to claim a berth in Sunday's fifth-place match against UC Riverside's Sean Robles.
The Cal pair of Smith and Jayashankar – playing in the flight C doubles consolation bracket – won an 8-5 semifinal against UCSD's Miaule/Mark Meyer to earn a spot opposite UCLA's Travis Martin/Nikolas Ramadan in Sunday's title match.
