Goransson Advances at All-American Championships
TULSA, Okla. – Andre Goransson moved one step closer to reaching main draw singles at the Saint Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Tuesday, as the California sophomore defeated Denver's Alex Gasson in the qualifying singles second round at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
The Golden Bear topped the Pioneer, 6-2, 6-0. Also in the second round, Cal junior Oskar Wikberg – ranked 81st – fell in an upset to Aleks Vukic of Illinois, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
In the qualifying doubles first round, the pair of Wikberg and sophomore Filip Bergevi lost to the 41st-ranked Purdue team of Diego Acosta/Ricky Medinilla, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Main draw doubles – which includes the seventh-ranked Cal duo of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton – and main draw singles run from Thursday through Monday at the All-American Championships.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
