BERKELEY - Filip Bergevi's singles win - completed right after Gregory' Bayane's singles win - clinched 12th-ranked California's 4-0 victory over Hawaii on a partly cloudy Thursday afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts. The freshman held off Danilo Casanova, 6-3, 6-5(1), on court two, as the Golden Bears improved their record to 4-0 after the nonconference match. The Warriors fell to 1-2.

Cal quickly took the doubles point. The court-one pair of juniors Bayane and Chase Melton topped the UH duo of Casanova and Jonathan Brooklyn, 6-3, and then Cal senior Ben McLachlan and sophomore Mads Engsted defeated Marcel Chan/Carter Lam, 6-5(1), on court two to give Cal a 1-0 lead in the overall match.

In singles, Engsted finished his court-six match first, beating Pavel Liska, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. In a photo finish, Bayane posted his 6-4, 6-4 win over Chas Okamoto on court four to give Cal three points, just before Bergevi completed his second-set tiebreaker two courts over to end the contest.

A native of Ahus, Sweden, Bergevi has compiled an 11-6 singles record so far in his first year as a Bear.

“It's a lot of fun,” he said of his freshman season. “I've never played with a team like this before. It pumps me up to hear cheering from all the other players and have the team behind you all the time. That makes me play a lot better.”

Cal returns to the Channing Tennis Courts on Saturday, as the Bears take on Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
