Cal Opens Napa Valley Classic With 4 Singles Wins
ST. HELENA, Calif. – Four Golden Bears won in singles on the first day of the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Friday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
The tournament's 32 players – including 24 collegians and eight players from the USTA Junior National Team – are divided into eight groups of four for the round-robin singles tournament. The college players hail from Cal, Alabama, Boise State, Florida State, San Diego, Stanford and Texas A&M.
In one of the early matches on Friday, junior Nikhil Jayashankar got California off to a good start with a 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, win over Texas A&M's Jordan Szabo in Group 8.
In Group 4, Cal freshman Andre Goransson topped Boise State's Thomas Tenreiro, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Filip Bergevi notched a Group 3 win over a USTA junior, while junior Gregory Bayane also won his match over a USTA junior in Group 2.
Each of the eight group winners will advance to the Solinco USTA Wild-Card Shoot-Out on Sunday.
The Napa event included afternoon doubles action on Friday. The Cal pair of Bergevi and Goransson fell to Florida State's Dominic Cotrone and Michael Rinaldi, 8-5, while the Bear duo of Bayane and Jayashankar lost to Boise State's Tenreiro and Nathan Sereke, 8-2.
The three-day Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic continues on Saturday, with Jayashankar again drawing an early match this time against Sereke at 10:30 a.m.
