PHILADELPHIA - California swept its three-match slate Saturday in NBC's 7s invitational at PPL Park to win Pool A and advance to Sunday's championship round.

The Golden Bears, who yielded only one try en route to outscoring Ohio State, LSU and Penn State by a combined total of 88-7, will face Utah in the championship quarterfinals Sunday at 10:19 a.m. ET.

If the Rugby Bears defeat the Utes in their Sunday quarterfinal, Cal will play the winner of Army vs. Texas in a semifinal with television coverage on VERSUS beginning on the West Coast at 11:05 a.m. PT. The final is slated for a 2:20 p.m. PT start live on NBC.

The Bears began pool play Saturday against Ohio State, scoring six tries and holding the Buckeyes scoreless to win, 38-0, in their first meeting since 2005. James McTurk had two tries for the Bears. Ohio State's Nate Ebner was a tough tackle assignment but Cal held firm when he and the Buckeyes threatened deep in Bear territory.

Following defensive stands, Cal was able to counter-attack fluidly and patiently. Winger Dustin Muhn downed Buckeye James Georgiades late in the contest as the Bears remained organized on defense to preserve their shutout.

In their second match of the day, the Bears blanked Louisiana State, 24-0, in their first-ever meeting with the Tigers. James Bailes accounted for 14 of Cal's points with his two tries and two conversions.

The Bears were tied with Penn State at the top of Pool A entering their final match of the day and Cal, which last faced the Nittany Lions at the 2010 national quarterfinals, jumped out to an early lead after Muhn scored in the second minute, his try converted by Sean Gallinger.

On the ensuing kickoff, Blaine Scully ran under the ball, secured possession and dashed down the sidelines for a try in the right corner. The conversion was no good but Cal led, 12-0.

As time wound down in the first half, Penn State was able to find the try zone with Chris Saint dotting down. Joe Baker nailed the conversion and then made a try-saving tackle of Muhn right before the break, leaving the score 12-7 in favor of the Bears.

In the second half, Muhn probed into PSU territory and then kicked ahead to find Scully at full pace down the right sideline, leaving the captain to score a try between the posts. Gallinger's conversion made it 19-7. A minute later, Connor Ring finished another attack, dummying a pass to his left to create his final gap. The made conversion brought the score to 26-7.

Other teams who advanced to the championship round were Dartmouth, which won Pool B ahead of Utah; Central Washington, which joins Army out of Pool C; and Arizona and Texas from Pool D.

Tomorrow's match with the Utes marks the third meeting of the 2011 season between Cal and Utah, and the first seven-a-side contest between the two teams since the Bears battled Utah into overtime before the Utes' Don Pati scored a sudden-death try to win the tournament at the 2010 invitational also televised on NBC.
