California Finishes 12th at the NCAA Championships

BRYAN, Texas -
The No. 6 California Golden Bears finished the 2010-11 season with a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships, played at the par-72, 6,260 yard Traditions Golf Course in Bryan, Texas.
Cal began the day closing out the third round, which had been halted the night before due to darkness. <>
"We made a great effort in coming back to the course at 5:30am to play our final three holes from round three,"said head coach Nancy McDaniel. "Shooting even par put us into the top half of the field and a tee time in the afternoon."
The Bears rallied in the final round, shooting a six-over 294, their second lowest round of the 72-hole, four round tournament. Cal finished with 1,197 strokes, just one stroke shy of finishing in the top-10 and 24 strokes behind National Champion UCLA. The Bruins held on to win the title by four strokes over defending-champion Purdue.
"Our finish today was tremendous," McDaniel said. "We had seven birdies in the last three holes and made a big run at a top 10 finish."
Junior Joanne Lee had the low round for Cal for the tournament, shooting a three-under 69 in the final round. Lee had six birdies on the afternoon, including getting birdies on two of her final three holes, the seventh and eighth, to move to four-under, but she bogeyed her final hole to finish with a 69. Lee, who led the Bears in three of the four rounds, finished the tournament at one-over, tying for eighth place among individuals. Lee came into the round in a tie for 16th place. Lee finished eight shots behind the individual medalist, Austin Ernst of LSU (-7). Lee joined UCLA's Tiffany Lua (+3, tied for fourth place) in representing the Pac-10 in the top-10 finishers.
"Joanne Lee led our team with a -3 round of 69 and a stellar 8th place finish," McDaniel said. "She was honored at the NGCA banquet for her second straight year as a member of the NGCA All-American team. Joanne's leadership for our team on the golf course is unmatched and it is fitting that she would end on such a great note today in the National Championship."
Junior Emily Childs had her best round in the final round, getting birdies on her final two holes, 8 and 9, to finish with a one-over 73. Freshman Nicola Roessler, who had to withdraw during the third round, rebounded in the fourth round, finishing with a two-over 74. Roessler, who was at one-over through nine holes, had a pair of birdies to offset three bogeys on the back nine to finish at two over.
Senior Pia Halbig closed out her Cal career with the second lowest score on the team, +15. She finished in a tie for 55th place.
In addition to Lee's All-American honors, four Bears were recognized as candidates for NGCA All-American Scholar honors: Emily Childs, Daniela Holmqvist, Pia Halbig, and Nicola Roessler. The student-athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher and play in 75% of the team's schedule. "We are so proud of the academic honors of this team with four players being recognized last night as candidates for Academic All-American which has the strongest criteria in NCAA sports," McDaniel said.
