Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Trailing No. 17 William and Mary 10-4 in the second half, California shut out the Tribe the rest of the way and went on a scoring spree, but the Golden Bears still lost, 10-8, on Wednesday at Albert-Daly Field. Sophomore attacker Tara Arolla led the 2-6 Bears with three points (2 goals, 1 assist). William and Mary improved its record to 5-3 after the nonconference match.

"We're having a hard time with our first-half performances," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "We lost the first half in goals. We won the second half, but it wasn't enough to win the game. The things we were happy about in the second half were draw controls, the shooting, the second chances we gave ourselves and that our goalie stepped it up and made some big saves."

William and Mary's Ashley Holofcener led all players with five points (1 goal, 5 assists).

The host team had the edge over Cal in shots, 23-19, and ground balls, 25-21, though the Bears grabbed 11 draw controls to eight for the Tribe. Cal had the second-half advantage in shots, 14-11, and draw controls, 6-3.

Holofcener set up the game's first goal, by Sally Roberts, to give William and Mary a 1-0 lead at 1:50 into the first half.

Cal took a 2-1 lead on goals by freshman midfielder Megan Takacs (2:39) and sophomore attacker Allie Welsh (4:21).

But the Tribe ran off the last six goals of the half to lead, 7-2, at the break.

Cal trailed by a six-goal margin at 8-2 and 10-4, before the Bears rallied. Sophomore midfielder Vail Horn began the late run with a goal at 51:23, and Cal was down, 10-5. Senior midfielder Alex Tickner scored unassisted at 54:12, Arolla converted an eight-meter shot at 56:34 and Horn scored her second off an eight-meter shot at 59:57.

The Bears ran out of time and lost, 10-8.

Cal junior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made eight saves, while her counterpart, Emily Geary, made seven for the Tribe.

"For next game," Sherry said, "we're trying some different things to make the performance in the beginning of the game as good as in the second half."

Cal ends its current road trip when it plays George Mason at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 28, in Fairfax, Va.
