The Bears held Oregon to a season-low 317 yards. The Ducks' previous lowest total for 2010 was 385 yards gained at Arizona State.
Tonight marked the 11th time in school history Cal has faced the nation's No. 1 team. The Bears, who have never been ranked No. 1 themselves in the modern era, have yet to record a victory over a top-ranked squad. Oregon's visit to Memorial Stadium marks only the third time in school history Cal has hosted the nation's best.
Cal continues to lead the all-time series with Oregon, 39-32-2. Cal won the last meeting between the teams at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 1, 2008, a rain-drenched 26-16 victory.
Oregon went for two consecutive fourth-down conversion attempts during its first drive, converting the first but not the second. The Ducks ended the game 4-of-6 on fourth-down attempts. Opponents are 11-of-17 on fourth down against Cal so far this season.
Cal led at the end of the first quarter, 7-0, marking the fourth game this season in which Oregon trailed after the first 15 minutes (also at Tennessee, 6-3; vs. Stanford, 21-3; and at USC, 10-8). The Bears trailed by one point at halftime, the third-best showing by a Ducks opponent at the half so far in 2010 (Oregon was tied with Tennessee, 13-13; trailed Stanford, 31-24; and led ASU by four, 28-24, at the end of those halves). Cal trailed by two at the end of the third quarter, the closest an opponent has been to the Ducks after 45 minutes of play (Stanford was next closest, trailing by seven). The two-point loss by the Bears was the Ducks smallest victory margin of the year (ASU lost by 11).
TB Shane Vereen had game-high totals of 112 rushing yards and 26 carries, with one TD on the ground; to go with one reception for 10 yards. In 2010, he now has 96 points on 16 touchdowns (13 rushing, three receiving) in 10 games, for a single-season point total currently tied for ninth all-time at Cal with Jahvid Best, who did it in both 2008 and 2009. For his Cal career, Vereen is also now tied for ninth all-time with Best and Marshawn Lynch at 210 points. Vereen's career rushing total of 2,665 yards moves him into eighth place all-time for the Bears. His 29 rushing TDs are tied for third all-time at Cal with Best and Lynch. His 10th all-time 100-yard game is tied for seventh all-time at Cal with John Olszewski and Joe Igber.
DL Derrick Hill deflected a pass and later made his first career forced fumble and fumble recovery, stripping Oregon QB Darron Thomas and recovering it in the end zone for a TD, his first career points.
LB Mike Mohamed had a career-high and team season-high-tying 16 tackles to go with a sack.
DB Josh Hill had a career-high three pass breakups.
P Bryan Anger had career-high-tying eight punts that went an average of 43.6 yards, with two boots 50+ yards and two punted inside the 20.
Head coach Jeff Tedford, now with an all-time record of 72-40 (.642), remains two victories behind the school's all-time leader, Andy Smith (74, 1916-25) and one shy of James Schaeffer (73, 1909-15).
The attendance of 65,963 extends Cal's current streak with at least 50,000-plus fans at Memorial Stadium to 42 games - every home contest over the last seven seasons.
