Despite a tremendous defensive effort, the California field hockey team was defeated by No. 2 North Carolina, 1-0, Monday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Golden Bears' keeper Maddie Hand posted an impressive 13 saves, and had a clean sheet until the Tar Heels finally got a shot past her late in the second half. Cal falls to 5-6, while North Carolina remains undefeated at 12-0.
In the 60th minute, Kelsey Kolojejchick tallied the game's only goal when she took a shot from just inside the circle. Hand was able to get a piece of the shot, but the ball still found its way into the cage.
North Carolina recorded 27 shots to only one for the Bears. The Tar Heels also earned seven penalty corners, while Cal was not able to get one.
Hand had some help by senior Lisa Lohre and junior Erin Magill. Lohre and Magill each posted a defensive save, and they each have two on the year now.
Cal's only shot in the game was taken by sophomore Rachelle Comeau.
The Bears return to Maxwell Family Field Sunday, Oct. 10, when they face Harvard at 1 p.m. at Maxwell Family Field.
