Bears Lose To Defending NCAA Champion Maryland, 8-0

California allowed a season-high eight goals and lost to top-ranked Maryland, 8-0, Monday afternoon in College Park, Md. The Terrapins, who won the 2008 NCAA title, captured four goals in each half to secure the convincing victory. The Golden Bears fell to 2-5, 0-1, while Maryland remained undefeated at 9-0.
Katie O'Donnell and Nicole Muracco each scored three goals, and Muracco also tallied an assist. The Terrapins scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to jump out to an early lead.
Sophomore Jessica Kreck tallied two shots, one of which was on goal for the Bears. Fellow sophomore Erin Magill had Cal's other shot.
Junior Lisa Lohre recorded a defensive save for the third straight match. She now has four on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Hand made three saves in over 51 minutes of work, but she also allowed seven of the eight goals. Sophomore Jessica Pizarek made two saves.
Cal returns home for its NorPac conference home opener against Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at Maxwell Family Field.
