Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - California routed first-year program Fresno State, 19-0, in both teams' season opener and the Bulldogs' first official game on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium. Golden Bears senior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson played every minute in goal and recorded Cal's first complete-game shutout since 2000, the Bears' second year of existence, and Cal senior attacker Sam Price led all scorers with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). The Bears have a 1-0 record (1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) after its conference match with the Bulldogs, while Fresno State starts out 0-1 (0-1 MPSF).

"It was really neat to be part of their historic day," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "They did a lot before the game - the color guard played the national anthem, they had the team run out like through a football tunnel, there were a lot of fans. It was a great atmosphere to be part of. Also, they put pressure on us early. That was good for us to get the nerves out and get the season underway."

Dyson only had to make one save to preserve the shutout, as Cal outshot the Bulldogs, 32-2. The shutout is Cal's first since goalie Eden Coelho blanked UC Santa Cruz, 16-0, on April 16, 2000, in Santa Cruz, Calif. Prior to the Cal-Fresno State game, Coelho had recorded all the shutouts in Cal's history - four in all - during the 2000 season.

Cal junior midfielder Alyse Kennedy (4 goals, 1 assist), who tied sophomore midfielder Emily Abbood (1 goal, 4 assists) with five points, scored the game's first three goals, the first coming 5:28 into the first half. Twenty seconds after Kennedy's first goal, Price assisted on Kennedy's second. Kennedy scored a quick hat trick with her third at 6:48 that made the score 3-0 Cal.

The Bears rolled out to a 12-0 halftime lead after outshooting Fresno State 22-1. Included in that run were Vail Horn's first two collegiate goals. The Cal freshman midfielder wound up with four goals on the day.

In the second half, Cal freshman attacker Tara Arolla and freshman midfielder Lauren Johnson also scored their first collegiate goals. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 10-1 in the second half en route to seven goals.

Cal returns to action when the Bears play third-ranked Duke at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, Feb. 15, in Denver.
