BERKELEY - California dropped its home opener to Drexel, 2-1, in overtime on Monday at Maxwell Family Field, as Dragons senior midfielder Amanda Kicera scored a golden goal in the 72nd minute. The loss evened Cal's record at 1-1, while Drexel improved to 2-0.

In the first and only overtime period, Drexel had a two-on-one break with Golden Bears senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche. Dragons sophomore forward Susan Ciufo passed the ball to Kicera, who slotted the ball past the diving goalie.

Knoche finished with six saves. Her Drexel counterpart, Colleen McAndrew, made 10 saves, including saves on all four Cal shots in the second half. The Bears did not record an overtime shot.

Drexel took an early 1-0 lead. After midfielder Jordan Freese took a penalty corner and midfielder Carolina Giberneau settled the ball, defender Jennifer Bolger opted to pass to midfielder Jen Cairone, who scored from inside the circle in the third minute.

Erin Magill, a redshirt freshman defender, scored the tying goal and the first of her career in the 30th minute. Cal senior midfielder Andrea Lo started the play with a penalty corner, senior defender Rachel Moffitt settled the ball and Magill scored from the top of the circle.

"It was a good game," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We need to finish our opportunities better. We had a number of breakaways and chances that we didn't capitalize on."

Cal next plays three straight NorPac Conference games on the road, with Longwood hosting all three in Farmville, Va. The Bears play Longwood at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, Sept. 4, take on Radford at 1 p.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 5, and wind up their trip against Appalachian State at 7 a.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 7. Cal will have played its first five games of the 2008 season in a span of nine days.

"I don't have a problem with scheduling that way," Onstead said, "since in the conference tournament and the national tournament you have to play multiple games in a short period of time."
