Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Alyse Kennedy scored a career-high eight points and Brittany Aungier scored a career-high six goals to power California to a 21-10 victory over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Aggie Stadium. The win over their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent gives the Golden Bears a 7-5 record (3-0 MPSF), while the Aggies fell to 4-8 (0-3). Cal also has a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series with UC Davis.

This marks the second straight game that Cal scored a season high in goals. Against Saint Mary's on April 2, Cal won, 15-2.

The big offensive numbers put up by Aungier and Kennedy against Davis moved them up Cal's various all-time single-game scoring/assist lists. Kennedy's eight points tie her with former teammates Jocelyn Paul and Liz Reifsnyder for second place on the school's single-game scoring list. All three trail former Cal star Colleen O'Mara, who scored nine points in a game in 2004. Kennedy's five assists tie her for first place with O'Mara, who accomplished the feat twice, on Cal's all-time single-game assist list.

Aungier's six goals put her in a three-way tie for third place on Cal's all-time single-game goalscoring list behind Sarah Wheatley and Molly Brady (7 each).

The Davis game was close at halftime, as Cal held an 11-9 lead at the break. But the Bears' defense allowed just one goal and seven shots to Davis in the second half. Cal head coach Theresa Sherry credits in part the adjustments Cal made after calling timeout when Davis took a 2-0 lead.

"We came out a little flat," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "They really just played well after the timeout we called. Our attack really came alive. We started turning around the draw controls. That was huge for us. We did well with that in the first half, and in the second half our work on the draws was awesome.

"Cristen Andrews [with 5] and Alyse [4] were getting the draws, and Brit was scoring off fastbreak opportunities that Alyse created. It was a great job of them working together. Really all seven of our attackers played well. We changed some things on defense at halftime, and we looked a lot sharper in the second half."

Sherry called timeout after Olivia Jarem (at 1:32) and Kate McGovern (2:00) scored for the Aggies. Andrews corralled Cal's first draw control after that, and then junior defender Sam Price scored Cal's first goal (4:03) off a Danni Zuralow assist. Davis led, 2-1. Zuralow, a senior attacker, chipped in four points (3 goals, 1 assist) for the game.

Cal dominated the draw controls in the second half, 11-1, and had a 21-12 advantage for the game. As with the draws, Cal had the edge in most of the statistics, including 34-20 in shots and 25-15 in ground balls, and they controlled those stat categories in the second half (21-7 shots and 14-8 ground balls).

At 4:38, McGovern scored her second eight-meter goal of the game to give Davis a 3-1 lead. Cal senior midfielder Mary Downs scored her own eight-meter goal to make the score 3-2 and start a 5-0 Cal run.

Sherry then made a key move that paid immediate dividends. She brought in junior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson for freshman Allie Shropshire. Dyson intercepted a pass by Jarem to a teammate cutting in front of Cal's goal, and that possession eventually led to Cal's third goal, as Kennedy assisted on Aungier's first goal of the game at 6:16. The game was tied at 3-3.

Cal's run continued - Aungier scored a hat trick with more goals at 7:53 and 8:09, and Andrews scored at 6:32 - to give the Bears a 6-3 lead.

The Aggies charged back with four unanswered goals of their own, including two by McMahon, and they retook the lead at 7-6 at 22:00.

The Bears outscored Davis, 5-2, the rest of the half to claim an 11-9 lead at the break. McMahon, who led Davis with five points (4 goals, 1 assist) for the game, scored her fourth goal and the final goal of the first half at 27:53.

Cal was on fire in the second half, putting the defensive clamps on the Aggies and scoring the first seven goals to take an 18-9 lead. Davis scored its only goal at 53:18 to make the score 18-10.

The Bears closed the game with the second goal of the season by sophomore attacker Katie Felber. Sophomore attacker Catie O'Mahoney, with her first assist of the season, set up Felber to make the final score 21-10.

Cal next battles MPSF foe Oregon at 1 p.m. on April 12 in Eugene, Ore.
