WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -
California dropped the first game of its seven-game road trip to William & Mary, 16-10, on Friday afternoon at Albert-Daly Field. The Golden Bears' record fell to 4-5 after the non-conference game, while the Tribe improved to 4-6.
Cal led at 3-0 less than three minutes into the game.
"William & Mary to their credit is very resilient, and it was nothing to them to be down by three," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "They've played a tough schedule. They were down a lot this year and fought back as we have at times. We struggled handling the pressure of being ahead. We got out of the gameplan in the defensive end of the field and in the attack as well. We struggled with draw controls as the tide started turning. That was a factor as well."
The Tribe wound up with a 16-12 edge in draw controls for the game.
Senior attacker Danni Zuralow led Cal in scoring with four points (2 goals, 2 assists). Clare Dennis scored a game-high six points (4 goals, 2 assists) for William & Mary, which outshot the Bears, 41-26, for the game. Also, the Tribe's Grace Golden (4, 1) and Jaime Sellers (4, 1) scored five points each.
The Bears took their 3-0 lead on a pair of unassisted goals by Zuralow (at 1:47 and 2:43) and a goal by sophomore midfielder Alyse Kennedy set up by junior defender Sam Price. The latter goal came at the 2:53 mark.
The host team proceeded to score the game's next five goals, with Dennis and Sellers each scoring twice and Golden scoring once, to give the Tribe a 5-3 lead at 11:25. Cal freshman midfielder Chapin Jackson scored the first of her two goals at 18:30 to snap William & Mary's run and make the score 5-4.
But the Tribe tallied the next three goals to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
William & Mary outshot Cal, 20-12, in the first half, though Cal had a 7-6 edge in draw controls at the break.
The Bears outscored the Tribe, 4-2, to open the second half, on goals by senior attacker Brittany Aungier (at 35:21), sophomore midfielder Elizabeth "T" Jahp (44:09), sophomore midfielder Tighe Hutchins (45:55) and sophomore midfielder Alex Tickner (46:07), and bring Cal within two goals of the lead at 10-8.
That was the closest Cal would get. The Tribe scored the game's next four goals, the last on an eight-meter conversion by Golden, to take a 14-8 lead at 18:49.
Jackson scored on her own eight-meter shot at 50:35, but Dennis and Golden struck again to make the score 16-9. Junior attacker Madeleine Dale scored the last goal of the day at 56:25 for the final 16-10 scoreline.
Bears freshman goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made the first start of her career, making nine saves in 47 minutes and 44 seconds of action. Junior goalie Morgan Dyson played the last 12:16 for Cal, making one save.
Freshman midfielder Emily Abbood collected a career-high four ground balls for the Bears, tying Cal senior midfielder Cristen Andrews and three William & Mary players for game-high honors.
Cal continues its road trip when it plays UMBC in a non-conference match at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 30, in Baltimore, Md.
