FARMVILLE, Va. - Sixteenth-ranked and top-seeded California lost to second-seeded Stanford, 2-1, on a deflected shot in the second overtime of the NorPac Tournament final on Saturday afternoon at Longwood University. The Golden Bears had been outshooting the Cardinal, 29-8, including a 9-0 shot advantage in overtime, before the winning goal on Stanford's only overtime shot at 93:41. Camille Gandhi scored the gamewinner for Stanford, which advances to play at Princeton in a Nov. 11 NCAA Play-In to the NCAA Tournament. Cal, with its senior-laden team, is not expected to gain one of the eight at-large berths to the 16-team NCAA Tournament and has likely ended its season with a 13-5 record. Stanford, which has beaten Cal two straight years in the conference tournament final, still has a losing record at 9-10.

"I'm really in shock right now, other than us missing two strokes and Stanford making their one," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "The dominance was unbelievable. How do you get 29 opportunities and not get more goals? It could've been 8-, 9-1."

Cal outshot Stanford 29-9 for the game, with senior midfielder/forward Ashley Glosz accounting for 10 of those shots.

"Ashley played awesome," Onstead said. "The kids did everything we asked them to. They executed the game plan. They executed the press perfectly. Even in overtime, we dominated that too. Ashley got thrown off at the end of regulation with a yellow card, but we killed the penalty and got her back on. We had three corners and a stroke in overtime. The stars didn't line up today. Ten seniors - what a way to go."

Stanford goalkeeper Alessandra Moss was big in goal for Stanford, making 13 saves to keep her team in the game.

"I give her credit," Onstead said. "She played well."

Senior forward Kellie York, assisted by senior defender Carolina Bistue, got the Bears on the scoreboard first at the 42:19 mark.

"We set them up perfectly with a corner option, and it worked perfectly," Onstead said. "It was almost like a quarterback read from Caro, who found the open receiver in the right place and scored a touchdown."

The shot disparity didn't translate into enough goals for Cal during regulation play. The Bears had a prime opportunity to score with a penalty stroke at 40:45, but Lo shot wide.

Cal led most of the way, until Xanthe Travlos converted a penalty stroke at 66:28 - three minutes and 32 seconds from the end of regulation - to tie the game at 1-1 and send the game to "sudden-victory" overtime.

Glosz had a great chance to end the game with a Cal penalty stroke at 87:49, but her shot hit the crossbar. That led to a Bears penalty corner, which created a chance for Lo, but Moss again made the save.

Gandhi's winning goal was a slow shot that hit a Cal defender's stick and rolled into the Bears' net.

Lo and senior defender Rachel Moffitt, who was named the NorPac Conference Defensive Player of the Year earlier this week, earned spots on the NorPac All-Tournament team.

The Cardinal takes the season series, 2-1. Cal had lost its previous game against Stanford, 2-1 in overtime, on Nov. 1 in Stanford, Calif., after beating the Cardinal, 2-1, on Oct. 24 in Berkeley.

Onstead said she had a difficult time addressing her team afterwards.

"I told them they were one of the best teams to come through so far, and I felt bad for them," Onstead said. "They played really well, and did everything we asked them to. It's hard to be the two kids who stepped up for the strokes. I told them I ended my career that way, too."
