Box Score

BERKELEY - Junior forward Ashley Glosz scored two goals, including the gamewinner in the 57th minute, and made a defensive save to lead California to a 2-1 victory over No. 20 Stanford on a cloudy Sunday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field. The win gives the Golden Bears, who have a 6-1 overall record and 4-0 NorPac record, sole possession of first place in the conference and extends their winning streak against Stanford to 17 games. Cal is also on a six-game winning streak.

With its first loss this season, Stanford falls to 6-1 (4-1).

"It's a huge win for us, because this is the best Stanford team they've had since I've been at Cal," Glosz said.

Glosz has scored a goal or an assist in each of Cal's last five games, during which she scored all 12 of her points (5 goals, 2 assists) this season. She also has two gamewinning goals.

Cal head coach Shellie Onstead lauded Glosz's heady play of late, saying "she thrives on this kind of stuff, and it really helps spurs the team. She's outstanding that way."

Cal hasn't lost to Stanford in field hockey since Oct. 6, 2001, when the Cardinal defeated the Bears, 1-0, at Stanford.

"Streaks can be broken and were made to be broken," Onstead said, "but I didn't want it to happen here."

The first half was a defensive battle between evenly matched teams. Cal senior goalkeeper Liz Braasch, who was questionable to start the game, played the whole way and made four of her eventual five saves in the first 35 minutes.

"Liz was outstanding today," Onstead said. "I was really struggling before the game deciding on whom to start, but, wow, she played great."

Bears redshirt freshman Sophie Sproats made a defensive save in the 19th minute off a shot by Stanford's Xanthe Travlos.

After a scoreless first half, the Cardinal took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rachel Mozenter, who was assisted by Camille Gandhi, in the 41st minute.

The Bears tied the match on a goal set up by a penalty corner taken by junior midfielder Andrea Lo. Junior defender Rachel Moffitt made the stick stop and junior defender Christina McGrath took a shot that Glosz tipped over Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell in the 49th minute.

Glosz got the winner in the 57th minute. Cal sophomore forward Kellie York fired a shot that Bell saved. Glosz collected the rebound and shot the ball off of Bell's pads into the far right corner.

In the 65th minute after a Stanford penalty corner, Glosz made a defensive save on Jaime Erickson's shot to help preserve the victory.

The Bears have one more regular-season conference match left - vs. Longwood on Oct. 30 in Berkeley. That is Cal's last game before the NorPac tournament Nov. 1-3 at Stanford.

Next week, Cal plays Stanford again, this time in a non-conference match, at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Stanford.
