BERKELEY - Senior midfielder Liz Reifsnyder came off the bench to score California's final two goals, including the eventual gamewinner, in a tight 11-10 victory over William and Mary on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The Golden Bears' record improves to 5-1.

Reifsnyder's final goal gave Cal an 11-9 lead at the 57:38 mark. Jaime Sellers scored at 59:21 to cut the lead to 11-10. Dolly Williams shot wide twice in the final 14 seconds for William and Mary, which fell to 1-4 on the season.

"I was frustrated in the first half, because I thought we were lethargic," Cal head coach Jill Malko said. "The game we played on Tuesday [a 16-7 win over Colgate] was great. We showed a lot of intensity. I didn't think we had enough in the tank today.

"I got on them at halftime, to light a fire under them to get the draws and ground balls, and they did. They really responded in the second half. It's good to have a come-from-behind win. We haven't done that in a long time. It gives you confidence when you do it."

Bears senior midfielder Laura Cavallo led all scorers with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) and freshman teammate Tighe Hutchins added three goals and one assist. Kristen Wong and Julia Martin each scored two goals and one assist in a losing cause for the Tribe.

Normally a starter, Reifsnyder, who suffered a shoulder injury in practice recently, did not play the first half and missed the 13-12 March 9 loss to Connecticut. But she started the second half against William and Mary.

"I was trying to save her," Malko said of Reifsnyder, one of Cal's tri-captains. "But when it got tight I wanted some leadership in there. She did everything I wanted her to, winning those draws at crucial times, taking care of the ball and moving the offense. She's done a really good job this year of accepting that leadership role. Her presence and ability to keep things calm was crucial for us today."

Cavallo opened the scoring with an unassisted strike at 2:40 in the first half. The Tribe responded with three straight goals, with one by Clare Dennis on a free-position shot and two by Martin that gave William and Mary a 3-1 lead at 16:42.

Cal then struck three times, with two Cavallo goals sandwiched around junior Brittany Aungier's goal. The Bears led, 4-3, at 28:19.

The fleet-footed Wong tied the game 30 seconds later with her first goal. Eleven seconds later at 29:00, Martin set up teammate Mary Zulty to give William and Mary a 5-4 lead it took into halftime.

Even with sophomore Madeleine Dale scoring two minutes into the second half to tie the game at 5-5, William and Mary scored four of the next five goals to take a 9-6 lead after Wong's second goal at 43:24.

Cal ran off the next five goals, with Hutchins scoring her second and third goals, Aungier notching her second and Reifsnyder firing in the Bears' last two of the game.

The Bears are on the road for the next four games, playing their next match on March 28 against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
