Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - California fell, 3-0, to 19th-ranked Virginia in a non-conference match on Thursday at University Hall Turf Field to snap the Golden Bears' winning streak at seven games. The Bears' record fell to 7-2, while the Cavaliers improved to 6-5.

The loss evened Cal's record against nationally ranked teams at 2-2.

Despite compiling more penalty corners than Virginia, 12-7, and tying the Cavaliers in shots, 13-13, Cal was shut out for the second time this season. The Bears lost 2-0 to then-No. 15 Indiana in the season opener.

"It was extremely frustrating," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We went out and hammered them in the first half and let them back in in the second half. They played a much better second half. We had plenty of chances and opportunities in the first half and couldn't score. Virginia was good, but I felt like we let one get away.

"Our defense actually played well. Sophie Sproats and Rocky [Rachel Moffitt] did well. Sophie did some nice tackling. We worked on that during the week, so that was good to see. Gwen Belomy in the middle had a good game. We had bad luck up front with shots that were wide or were tipped wide. Normally I'm confident get that if we get that many corners we would score."

Junior defender Christina McGrath took a game-high five shots - with four on goal - for the Bears, who trailed 1-0 at halftime.

After Cal's fifth corner of the first half, the Cavs pushed the ball upfield and into the Bears' circle. The Cal defense knocked it away from Traci Ragukas, but Kaitlyn Hiltz collected the loose ball and scored in the 22nd minute to give UVa a 1-0 lead.

The Bears had the edge in shots, 8-3, and corners, 8-1, at halftime.

Hiltz assisted goals by Virginia's Jamie Mulare in the 37th minute and Sara Confer in the 70th minute to produce the final 3-0 scoreline.

Cal next plays Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 6, and then James Madison at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 7. Both games will take place at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va.
