Christina McGrath and Jennifer Crane scored first-half goals to lead California to a 2-1 victory over Northwestern on Sunday at Maxwell Family Field. The Golden Bears improved their record to 9-4 after the non-conference match, while the Wildcats fell to 4-9.
"It was a good win in that we didn't seem to have the spark that you like to see the players come out with," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said, "so they grinded through it, and I give them credit for finding a way to do that. I think the second half was better for us than the first. We really put the pressure on. That runs the energy, which is good."
Crane put the Bears on the scoreboard first when she roofed a 10-yard strike in the seventh minute. The senior forward, who scored her team-high seventh goal of the season against the Wildcats, tied Cal junior forward Ashley Glosz with a game-high four shots. Crane now leads Cal in scoring with 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists).
"Jenny had an outstanding game," Onstead said. "She put the offense on her back. We all seemed a little out of step, and I give her credit for stepping up as a senior and a captain."
Northwestern tied the game at 1-1 when junior forward Alex Quinn set up sophomore forward Liz Dobbs for a goal in the 20th minute.
In the 30th minute, junior midfielder Carolina Bistue assisted McGrath on the game-winning goal, the junior defender's second gamewinner of the season and her fourth goal overall in 2007. Bistue's assist gives her five for the season and ties her with junior midfielder Andrea Lo for the Cal lead this year.
Cal outshot Northwestern, 15-8, for the game and claimed a 10-5 advantage on short corners. Bears junior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche, playing a complete 70 minutes for the second consecutive game, made two saves, while counterpart Emily Kyle made five saves for the Wildcats.
The Bears next travel to Stockton, Calif., to play NorPac Conference foe Pacific at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20.
